Roy McCAIN, Owner, Cascade Peaks
Resort. Roy’s life has not always been easy, being the ninth child of ten siblings left little to go around, but strengthened his desire to have more in his life. Married at the age of twenty one, drafted during the Korean War and raising four beautiful daughters just strengthened his desire to leave a legacy behind. Not always known for being an entrepreneur, Roy started as a laborer, working at the Arago Cheese Factory which later was purchased by Bandon Cheese. Next, he accepted a Foreman's position at Myrtle Point Cheese Factory. Simultaneously, he and his family grew strawberries for wholesale and retail...as if that wasn't enough to keep a normal man busy he decided to venture into the wool industry, raising hundreds of sheep, as the sheep were doing well, he decided to add on to his farm with another 1000 acres to equip him with the space for additional sheep and the incoming cattle that would be added to his ranch. In Roy’s spare time, which was very little, he would hop on his tractor and drive to neighborhood gardens. In 1975, Roy sold the farm in Oregon and teamed up with his brother and nephew to create McCain Trail Construction, building 256 miles of walking trails for the U.S. Forest Service. Upon completion, Roy built his home in Glenoma and developed The Glenoma Trout Farm. The farm consisted of 30 fish ponds along with a hatchery and processing building where he sold fish commercially around the world. In 1982, Roy’s family gathered to welcome the birth of his first granddaughter Karrie. While gathered together, he and his family decided to fly the scenic flight over Mt.St. Helens. The plane carrying Roy, his wife Emma and daughter Rhonda crashed at the base of Mt St. Helens taking the life of a great pilot and friend Don Morris of Packwood. Grateful that he and his family survived, but badly injured. Roy’s rehabilitation was a little unconventional. For Roy had a dream, a dream to create and develop an RV Resort on the banks of the Cowlitz River. While still recovering from his injuries, one would find him on his John Deere Cat creating the greatest accomplishment of his life Maple Grove Resort which included 134 campsites, pool, and GPA golf course. Upon his retirement in 1999 he sold Maple Grove Resort, which is now known as a part of KM Resorts. For a man who had worked all his life in creating a better world for his family and his community, it wasn’t a surprise to find him soon coming out of retirement to take on the task of purchasing and rebuilding Naco West Resort, which is now known as Cascade Peaks Resort, located between Randle and Packwood on Hwy 12. Cascade Peaks Resort is known today as being the largest five star resort in the northwest with over 700 campsites, store, pools, sauna, Jacuzzi, playground, and recreational center and soon to be completed golf course. Cascade Peaks Resort is a membership resort. Family Reunions, special groups as boy scouts of America and Search and Rescue have attended the resort for their meetings along with over night campers needing a safe place to stay the night. With the re-marriage of his lovely wife, Ruth, in 2002, there was talk about Roy going back into retirement. As 2005 has arrived, Roy has been preparing for another great season at Cascade Peaks Resort. On a more personal
note, we, his daughters would like to say that dad, even at the age
of 72, will always be creating, building, and dreaming of a better
place for his family and community, whether it is Cascade Peaks or
another venture. For we know that with every breath he has taken he
has instilled in us his strength, drive, commitment and determination
to make a difference in the lives of others and hopefully we will
keep his legacy and dreams alive. |
