Carol makes her wine from strawberries, rasberries, cranberries, blackberries, and plums. There are plans for a watermelon wine. "Cranberries are from bogs in Long Beach; everything else is from friends and family", says Carol. A highway construction truck driver by day, Carol started developing wine recipes after work. Soon she could barely keep up with the requests for her wine. "My sister refers to me as the Backyard Boones Farmer, "Wells said. Today she is running Lewis County's newest winery. Wells, originally from New Jersey, moved to Onalaska more than 30 years ago. Although she is not officially a Washington native, she insists that her ingredients are. "But I might have to get watermelons from Oregon, " Wells said. Her wines are not yet certified organic, but she ensures that the fruit she processes is grown naturally and primarily in Lewis and Cowlitz counties. "I want to support our community" Her wines are sweet, not dry, but carry a complex taste not to be dismissed as simply a desert wine. "You don't wait till the second glass to enjoy my wine," Lewis County News |
